Parenting dilemma question of the day

Do you think it is alright to give a child Benedryl at night to help him or her learn to get to sleep better for short period of time?

Assume the child is at least age 6 (the age the label says a child needs to be to take Benedryl safely) and is not falling asleep until midnight each night even though he or she lays there in bed for hours trying to sleep.

Or, do you think this is not a good idea since Benedryl is for allergies, not sleep problems, and a child so young should not be given medication to help them sleep?

Some may say, all it takes is some behavior modification. "Stick to your guns" or "hang in there, you don't need medicine" Have you tried behavior modification at the end of a long day? It's not pretty. I used to be one of those moms who wanted to do everything "right" or what the world perceived was "right" I've learned over the last 18 years and 8 children that you have to do what is in the best interest of that child. We all know what being sleep deprived does to us. We're grouchy, tired, and our mind doesn't work well. Why would we want our child to go through that because it's not "right" to give him a little shot of Benedryl to help encourage good sleep habits. So I say, YES, give him a teaspoon of instant sleep. You'll be happier and so will he.

I'll have to disagree with Huston Family. I myself have taken Benedryl many times for allergies. At first it will make me sleepy but after taking it for a longer period of time it makes me have insomnia and I will lay there for hours, yes hours, before I can go to sleep.

I have been soooo sleepy during the day for the past several months. I thought I had some problems and went to the doc and had $1,200 worth of blood work done. Nothing was wrong with me. I take Singular and was sent an email warning me of the side effects of Singular that the FDA is going to make them put on the bottles. INSOMNIA and SLEEP DISTURBANCES!!!! Bingo!!! I quit taking it about 3 weeks ago and I am feeling GREAT!!!!

You really have to watch these types of medicines. I think I would try getting your 6 yr old up at the crack of dawn around 6 or 7 and perhaps getting up earlier in the morning will help to get them to go to bed earlier at night. One thing that really helps me kids to get to bed earlier is playing outside for a long time. They just love being outside and playing.

Good Luck to You in this!
